Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Expanded allogenic adult adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs or ASCs) are multipotent stromal cells isolated from the adipose (fat) tissue of healthy adult donors and subsequently cultured and expanded in vitro. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages (including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes), as well as their potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. Allogenic use refers to administration of these cultured stem cells from a donor to a genetically non-identical recipient. The mechanism of action is primarily through paracrine signaling—secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and trophic molecules—which modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair/regeneration, reduce inflammation, facilitate endogenous cell regeneration (such as pancreatic β-cells), preserve residual functional mass in damaged tissues (e.g., islets in diabetes), enhance angiogenesis/vascularization in injured tissues (e.g., bone defects), and support wound healing[1][4][5]. Expanded allogenic AD-MSCs have been investigated for a wide range of indications including orthopedic conditions (bone repair/non-union fractures), cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, diabetes mellitus types 1 & 2 (for β-cell preservation/regeneration), liver cirrhosis/fibrosis due to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis or fatty liver disease[1][2][3][4][5]. They remain investigational for most indications; clinical trials have demonstrated safety with some evidence for efficacy but no broad regulatory approval yet.
