Expanded autologous adipose-derived adult stem cells (AdMSCs) represent a cell-based therapeutic modality where a patient's own mesenchymal stromal cells are extracted from adipose tissue, expanded ex vivo, and reintroduced to treat various inflammatory and degenerative conditions. These cells function through complex paracrine signaling, secreting immunomodulatory cytokines and growth factors that inhibit cell-mediated immune responses and promote tissue repair and angiogenesis. Key clinical programs include TiGenix's CX-401 for complex perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease and American CryoStem's ATCell for post-concussion syndrome and other regenerative applications. As an autologous therapy, it minimizes the risk of immune rejection, though it requires a personalized manufacturing process for each patient.
