Expanded autologous adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) are a cell therapy product consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from a patient's own adipose tissue, typically harvested from the periumbilical area. Following isolation, the cells undergo *in vitro* expansion (typically up to passage 3) to increase the therapeutic cell population. These cells are characterized by the expression of specific surface markers, including CD73, CD90, and CD105, and the absence of hematopoietic markers. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, these cells are administered via intra-articular injection. Their therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to paracrine mechanisms, where the cells secrete bioactive molecules that exert anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and chondroprotective effects, rather than direct differentiation into new cartilage. This helps to improve the joint environment, reduce synovial inflammation, and potentially delay disease progression.
