Overview

Expanded umbilical cord blood (UCB) cell therapy is an experimental regenerative medicine approach being developed by the Hudson Institute of Medical Research (Hudson Institute Cell Therapies) for the treatment of preterm brain injury. Preterm infants are at high risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities due to inflammation and oxidative stress in the developing brain. This therapy involves the ex vivo expansion of specific cell populations from umbilical cord blood to provide a more potent therapeutic dose. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of neuroinflammation, reduction of oxidative stress, and promotion of endogenous repair mechanisms within the neonatal brain. It is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
