Overview

Experimental Dentifrice 1 (ED1) is a topical oral care formulation developed by Haleon to address both extrinsic dental staining and dentine hypersensitivity. It contains 5% potassium nitrate as the active desensitizing agent, which works by increasing extracellular potassium ion concentration to depolarize dental pulp nerve endings, thereby inhibiting the transmission of pain signals. For stain removal, the formulation utilizes a dual-action system consisting of 5% sodium tripolyphosphate (STP), a chemical chelating agent that disrupts the protein-rich dental pellicle to break down and prevent stain attachment, and 1% micronized alumina, which provides mild mechanical abrasion. ED1 is characterized by a low relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) of approximately 40, making it suitable for patients with sensitive teeth while effectively improving tooth shade and removing surface stains. This experimental formulation is part of the research lineage that contributed to the development of Haleon's Sensodyne Clinical White product line.
