Overview

Exposure to Plasmodium falciparum infected mosquitoes is a Controlled Human Malaria Infection (CHMI) methodology developed and utilized by Radboud University Medical Center. In this model, healthy, malaria-naïve volunteers are deliberately exposed to the bites of five laboratory-reared Anopheles mosquitoes carrying Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. This procedure is designed to induce a predictable and controlled malaria infection, serving as a rigorous challenge model to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of malaria vaccine candidates and antimalarial drugs in Phase IIa clinical trials. The model utilizes various parasite isolates, including the standard NF54 strain and genetically diverse isolates like PfA and PfB, to study heterologous protection and immunological mechanisms.
