Overview

Extended-release epidural morphine is a single-dose, lipid-encapsulated formulation of morphine sulfate designed for administration into the lumbar epidural space. It provides prolonged postoperative analgesia for up to 48 hours after injection. The drug acts as an opioid agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, altering pain perception and response. Extended-release technology allows for sustained release and longer duration of action compared to standard formulations. It is primarily indicated for pain management following major surgeries such as hip arthroplasty, lower abdominal surgery (including cesarean section), and lower extremity procedures associated with moderate-to-severe pain[3][4][5][7]. The formulation reduces the need for continuous infusions or repeated dosing but carries risks typical of opioids—including respiratory depression and pruritus—at higher rates than some alternative modalities[5][7].
