Overview

Extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen in the extracellular space. It is encoded by the SOD3 gene in humans and forms a glycosylated homotetramer that contains copper and zinc ions in its active site. EC-SOD has a unique heparin-binding domain that allows it to bind to the extracellular matrix and cell surfaces through interactions with heparan sulfate proteoglycan and collagen. This enzyme plays a critical role in protecting tissues from oxidative stress, particularly in the brain, lungs, and cardiovascular system.
