Overview

Extracellular vesicles of human glial progenitor cells (GPC-EV) are biologic nanoparticles secreted by glial progenitor cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These vesicles serve as an experimental therapeutic modality containing a cargo of neuroprotective microRNAs and proteins. Preclinical research, primarily conducted by the Research Institute of Human Morphology in Moscow, has demonstrated their potential in treating traumatic brain injury and glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. The therapeutic effect is mediated through multiple pathways, including the stabilization of calcium oscillations and mitochondrial membrane potential, activation of the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and reduction of neuroinflammation and apoptosis. GPC-EVs have also been shown to decrease levels of phosphorylated Tau and promote neuroplasticity, typically administered via intranasal delivery in animal models.
