Overview

This is a combination dietary supplement containing extracts from both green tea and black tea leaves, both derived from the plant Camellia sinensis. Green tea extract is rich in catechins—especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—while black tea extract contains theaflavins and thearubigins as its primary bioactive compounds. Both types of extracts are sources of caffeine, polyphenols, and other methylxanthines such as theobromine and theophylline. The main mechanisms attributed to these extracts include antioxidant activity via neutralization of free radicals, mild stimulation due to caffeine content, potential enzymatic inhibition affecting cholesterol metabolism (notably by EGCG on HMG-CoA reductase), uric acid metabolism (via xanthine oxidase inhibition), glucose transport modulation, and possible diuretic effects. While some studies suggest benefits for cardiovascular health, metabolic syndrome risk reduction, cancer prevention or progression delay, weight management support, alertness enhancement due to caffeine content, and cholesterol lowering effects—clinical evidence remains mixed or inconclusive for most indications[2][5][6][8]. Excessive intake may cause side effects such as liver toxicity (especially with high-dose green tea extracts), gastrointestinal upset, insomnia or anxiety due to caffeine content[1][7]. This combination is marketed primarily as a dietary supplement rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
