Eyecyte-RPE is an allogeneic cell therapy consisting of a suspension of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Developed by Eyestem Research, it is designed to treat geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapy aims to replace damaged or lost RPE cells in the macula, which are essential for the metabolic support and survival of photoreceptors. By restoring the RPE layer, Eyecyte-RPE potentially enables tissue regeneration and arrests the progression of vision loss. The product is formulated as a cryopreserved, scalable suspension administered via a single subretinal injection. Clinical data from Phase 1 trials have demonstrated a favorable safety profile and significant improvements in visual acuity, with some patients showing early signs of disease reversal.
