ezetimibe

Ezetimibe is a small molecule cholesterol absorption inhibitor used to lower blood cholesterol levels. It works by selectively inhibiting the Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) protein on the epithelial cells of the small intestine and hepatocytes, thereby reducing intestinal absorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol. This leads to decreased delivery of cholesterol to the liver and increased clearance of circulating cholesterol from the blood. Ezetimibe is indicated for use in adults and children with primary hypercholesterolemia (including familial heterozygous and homozygous forms), mixed dyslipidemia, and homozygous familial sitosterolemia. It can be used alone or in combination with statins or fenofibrate when additional lipid-lowering effect is needed[1][3][4][5][7].
