Drug intelligence / Profile preview
FÉMI is a monophasic combined oral contraceptive (COC) containing the progestin norgestimate (0.250 mg) and the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol (0.035 mg). Developed and marketed by the French pharmaceutical company Effik, it is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women and adolescents of childbearing age. The medication works primarily by suppressing the secretion of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) through the activation of progesterone and estrogen receptors, which inhibits ovulation. Secondary contraceptive effects include increasing the viscosity of cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. FÉMI is administered as a daily oral tablet for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day hormone-free interval.
