FA-ExoCBD is an experimental, orally delivered, targeted exosomal formulation of cannabidiol (CBD). It consists of CBD encapsulated within exosomes that are surface-functionalized with folic acid to target folate receptors, which are frequently overexpressed in certain cancers, particularly triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The exosomes used in this delivery system are typically derived from bovine colostrum, providing a robust vehicle that protects the CBD payload from the acidic environment of the gastrointestinal tract and enhances its oral bioavailability. FA-ExoCBD demonstrates superior tumor targeting and retention compared to free CBD or non-functionalized exosomal CBD. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of multiple genes; it downregulates pro-metastatic and inflammatory markers such as IL13RA2, TRPM2, and SAMHD1, while upregulating tumor suppressors like PRDM1 and ICAM1. This dual approach of targeted delivery and gene modulation results in significant inhibition of orthotopic tumor growth in preclinical models.
