Overview

FA-ORMD is a type of folic acid-conjugated organically modified silica (ORMOSIL) nanoparticle. These dye-loaded nanoparticles are synthesized as targeted optical nanoprobes for in vitro and in vivo imaging. The conjugation of folic acid to the nanoparticle surface facilitates strong cellular uptake in cancer cells that overexpress the folic acid receptor, such as pancreatic cancer Miapaca-2 cells and hepatoma SMMC7721 cells. In vivo studies have demonstrated preferential accumulation of FA-ORMD nanoparticles in tumor sites with low observed toxicity, indicating significant potential for early-cancer detection applications.
