Overview

This is an investigational faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) therapy being evaluated in the FARGO trial, a phase IIa randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The therapy is led and manufactured by the University of Birmingham's Microbiome Treatment Centre. It consists of processed fecal material containing natural gut microbes from rigorously screened healthy donors. The treatment is being investigated for patients with non-cirrhotic primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) who also have concomitant inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The biological target is the gut microbiome imbalance (dysbiosis) observed in these patients, with the aim of correcting it and potentially modulating immune pathways implicated in the disease's pathogenesis. The trial involves an initial dose via colonoscopy followed by seven weekly enemas.
