Overview

Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic product involving the transfer of fecal microorganisms from a healthy donor to a recipient. [5, 9] The aim is to restore a healthy gut microbiome, which is often disturbed (dysbiosis) in various diseases. [5, 7] This specific intervention, studied by Aarhus University, targets patients with liver cirrhosis to prevent complications, slow disease progression, and reduce mortality. [3, 9] The underlying principle is that correcting dysbiosis will improve gut barrier function, reduce systemic inflammation, and modulate the gut-liver axis. [2, 4, 5]
