Overview

Faecalibacterium duncaniae is a next-generation probiotic and live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a commensal, anaerobic, butyrate-producing bacterium. Formerly classified as *Faecalibacterium prausnitzii*, it is being developed for the treatment of inflammatory and infectious diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colitis, and acute viral respiratory infections like influenza. The bacterium exerts its therapeutic effects through the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), specifically butyrate, and the microbial anti-inflammatory molecule (MAM) protein. These metabolites modulate the gut-lung axis and SCFA-interferon pathways to reduce systemic inflammation and viral load. Research also suggests potential in preventing the atopic march, a progression from allergic skin inflammation (atopic dermatitis) to respiratory involvement (asthma).
