SiP-001 is a next-generation live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a symbiotic consortium of two anaerobic gut bacterial strains: *Faecalibacterium prausnitzii* (DSM 32186) and *Desulfovibrio piger* (DSM 32187). The formulation leverages a unique metabolic cross-feeding relationship where *D. piger* consumes hydrogen produced by *F. prausnitzii*. This removal of hydrogen relieves metabolic inhibition, promoting the growth and biomass of *F. prausnitzii* and significantly enhancing the production of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) essential for maintaining gut barrier integrity and regulating metabolic homeostasis. Developed by Metabogen (a subsidiary of BioGaia), SiP-001 has been investigated in Phase 1 clinical trials (NCT03728868) for the treatment of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, as well as inflammatory bowel conditions.
