Overview

*Fagara tessmannii* (synonym *Zanthoxylum tessmannii*) is a medicinal plant native to the African rainforests, particularly in Cameroon. It is traditionally used to treat a variety of conditions including tumors, inflammation, hypertension, and obesity. Research indicates that extracts from its bark, leaves, and roots possess diverse pharmacological properties, including anti-obesity effects through the modulation of insulin sensitivity and vascular responsiveness, cytotoxic activity against drug-resistant cancer cells (mediated by ROS production and apoptosis), and antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant phenotypes. Additionally, it has been studied for its potential to improve male reproductive health by enhancing spermatogenesis and testosterone levels. Key bioactive constituents include alkaloids like nitidine and buesgenine, as well as various triterpenes and sterols.
