Overview

FAM-NP41 is a fluorescently labeled nerve-binding peptide being developed by Peking University Third Hospital for intraoperative visualization of cranial nerves during neurosurgery, particularly skull base tumor surgery. The active ingredient is NP41, a novel nerve-binding peptide, conjugated with FAM (carboxyfluorescein) as the fluorescent tag. This imaging agent works by selectively binding to laminin-421 and laminin-211 within the extracellular matrix of the nervous system after systemic injection. Following administration, a conformational change occurs between 2 and 24 hours, producing cyanish-green fluorescence (500-550 nm) when excited with 450-490 nm light, allowing surgeons to visualize cranial nerves during procedures. The drug is currently in Phase I/II clinical trials to evaluate its safety and efficacy for reducing iatrogenic nerve injuries during neurosurgical procedures.
