Overview

A combination therapy consisting of the antiviral agent famciclovir and the anticonvulsant gabapentin, utilized in the management of acute herpes zoster (shingles) and the prevention or treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir that inhibits viral DNA polymerase, thereby suppressing viral replication. Gabapentin acts by binding to the alpha-2/delta-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, modulating the release of excitatory neurotransmitters to alleviate neuropathic pain. This specific combination is being studied by investigator Xiaguang Duan in clinical trials evaluating the additive efficacy of multimodal nerve blocks and pulsed radiofrequency for severe zoster-associated pain.
