Overview
Famotidine is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a histamine H2 receptor antagonist (H2 blocker). It works by selectively inhibiting the histamine H2 receptors on the parietal cells of the stomach lining, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion. Famotidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines (gastric and duodenal ulcers), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis due to GERD, pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasias, and for reduction of risk of ulcer recurrence. Over-the-counter formulations are also used for relief or prevention of heartburn associated with acid indigestion or sour stomach.
