Famphur is a synthetic organothiophosphate compound used primarily as an insecticide and veterinary antihelminthic. It acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, disrupting the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at nerve synapses. This leads to accumulation of acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of the nervous system in insects and parasites, resulting in paralysis and death[1][3][5][6]. Famphur is highly toxic and has been approved for use in cattle as a pour-on treatment or medicated feed for controlling stomach worms (Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia), intestinal worms (Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Nematodirus, Bunostomum, Oesophagostomum), lungworms (Dictyocaulus), cattle grubs (Hypoderma), biting lice (Bovicola), and sucking lice (Linognathus, Solenoptes)[5]. It is classified by the World Health Organization as "highly toxic" due to its acute toxicity to humans and wildlife[6].
