Overview

Fanapanel is a quinoxalinedione derivative drug which acts as a competitive antagonist of the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) glutamate subtype receptors. It was under development by Schering AG/Bayer AG primarily for neuroprotection in acute ischemic stroke but clinical trials were halted due to safety issues including glial cell toxicity and intolerable side effects such as excessive sedation, reduction in consciousness (stupor/coma), transient neurological deterioration, blurred vision, impaired color perception and reduced visual acuity.
