Overview
Fangji Huangqi is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, also known in Japanese Kampo medicine as Boiogito. It typically consists of six herbal ingredients: *Stephania tetrandra* (Fangji), *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi), *Atractylodes macrocephala* (Baizhu), *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gancao), *Zingiber officinale* (Shengjiang), and *Ziziphus jujuba* (Dazao). Historically used to treat conditions characterized by "wind-dampness" and edema, it is currently being investigated for its efficacy in managing active knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The formula is thought to provide analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by reducing joint swelling and potentially protecting against cartilage degeneration. In clinical research, it has been studied both as a monotherapy and in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like meloxicam (Mobic) to improve physical function and reduce pain in patients with degenerative joint diseases.
