Farnesol + xylitol is a combination of two small molecules—farnesol, a sesquiterpene alcohol found in essential oils, and xylitol, a five-carbon sugar alcohol. This combination has been studied for its synergistic antibiofilm and antibacterial properties. Farnesol disrupts biofilm biomass and reduces bacterial viability by interfering with cell wall integrity and inhibiting superantigenic exotoxin production. Xylitol inhibits biofilm formation by disrupting glycocalyx production but minimally affects bacterial viability on its own. Together, they have shown enhanced efficacy against biofilms formed by pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis compared to either agent alone. The combination is being explored primarily for topical use in endodontics (root canal disinfection), dermatology (atopic dermatitis, rosacea), and potentially other skin conditions involving pathogenic biofilms[1][2][3][4][5].
