Overview

Faropenem sodium (brand name FROMOX) is an orally active penem antibiotic, a sub-class of the carbapenem family. It is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin. Faropenem exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. It is characterized by its stability against many beta-lactamases and its broad spectrum of activity against both aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Originally developed by Maruishi Pharmaceutical, it is widely prescribed in Japan and other Asian markets.
