FAST Lidocaine (Functional Microarray Augmentation of Skin Treatment with Lidocaine) is an investigational combination therapy consisting of a 4% lidocaine gel and a Functional Microarray (FMA) of needles. Developed by the University of Oklahoma, this system is designed to enhance the speed and depth of topical anesthesia for procedures such as venipuncture. The FMA device utilizes microneedles to bypass the stratum corneum barrier, creating micro-channels that facilitate the rapid transdermal delivery of lidocaine into the deeper layers of the skin. Lidocaine acts as a local anesthetic by binding to and blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, which prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing localized pain relief.
