Overview

The Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) is a 5-day dietary program developed by L-Nutra Inc, designed to simulate the metabolic effects of water-only fasting while providing essential macronutrients. Marketed as ProLon, the intervention consists of a specific plant-based, low-calorie, low-protein, and low-carbohydrate composition that triggers a state of differential stress resistance. In clinical oncology settings, the FMD is used as an adjunct to chemotherapy to protect healthy cells from treatment-induced toxicity while potentially sensitizing cancer cells to the therapy. This effect is mediated through the reduction of circulating levels of glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which shifts normal cells into a protected, maintenance-oriented state while cancer cells, due to their oncogenic mutations, remain vulnerable to chemotherapy.
