Fatty Acids Compounds (F.A.G.) Mouthwash is a topical oral rinse formulation developed by researchers at the University of L'Aquila for the treatment of gingivitis and the reduction of dental plaque. The formulation leverages the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory potential of specific fatty acid compounds to disrupt oral biofilms. Notably, F.A.G. is distinguished from traditional oral antiseptics like chlorhexidine as it is not classified as a conventional antibacterial agent. In a randomized clinical trial (NCT04977778), the mouthwash demonstrated noninferiority to stannous fluoride mouthrinse in reducing plaque accumulation within an experimental gingivitis model, suggesting its utility as an alternative for long-term oral care maintenance.
