Overview

Fav-Afrique is an **equine F(ab')2-based antivenom** that is polyspecific—designed to neutralize the venom of a broad range of medically relevant African snake species[1][3][5][7]. Its mechanism of action involves the binding and neutralization of venom toxins by polyclonal antibodies derived from horses immunized with venom from multiple snake genera, including *Echis*, *Bitis*, *Naja*, and *Dendroaspis*[1][3][5][7]. The antivenom is considered highly effective, with proven clinical utility for treating bites from at least ten species of snakes. It is especially valued in sub-Saharan Africa for its broad coverage and high efficacy relative to other available products[2][3][4][5][6]. Originally developed by Sanofi Pasteur, the drug addresses a major neglected public health issue: snakebite envenoming, which causes tens of thousands of deaths annually in Africa[3][4][5]. After Sanofi Pasteur ceased production due to market concerns, technology and manufacturing rights have since been transferred, and MicroPharm is now leading efforts to revive and modernize production[1][6][7]. The drug is targeted for use in rural clinical settings across Africa, though its high price and cold chain requirements have historically limited access[2][3][5].
