Overview

Favirab is a purified equine rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG) developed by Sanofi Pasteur for passive immunization against rabies. It consists of F(ab')2 fragments obtained from the plasma of horses hyperimmunized with inactivated rabies virus. Favirab is indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in individuals who have been exposed to rabies virus (Category III exposures according to WHO guidelines). The preparation provides immediate, short-term neutralizing antibodies that bind to the rabies virus at the site of inoculation, preventing viral attachment to host cells and subsequent entry into the central nervous system. Because it provides only temporary passive immunity, it must always be administered in conjunction with a full course of active rabies vaccination. The purification process, which involves pepsin digestion to produce F(ab')2 fragments, significantly reduces the risk of adverse reactions such as serum sickness compared to older, non-purified equine serum products.
