FC-122 is a semisynthetic derivative of glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) that functions as a dual inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and alpha-glucosidase. Developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D), it aims to address the disease through two distinct pathways: enhancing insulin sensitivity by inhibiting PTP1B and reducing the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines by inhibiting alpha-glucosidase. Preclinical evaluations in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat models have shown that FC-122 possesses significant anti-diabetic activity, surpassing the efficacy of the standard treatment acarbose, while maintaining a favorable safety profile in acute toxicity studies.
