Overview

Fe3O4-Cy is a nanoconjugate comprising superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) covalently linked with the near-infrared fluorescent dye Cyanine 5.5 (Cy5.5). This dual-functional nanosystem is designed for bimodal imaging: it serves as a T2-weighted MRI contrast agent due to the magnetic properties of Fe3O4, and as an optical agent for near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging. The conjugate thus enables both magnetic and optical detection of biological targets, especially for in vivo cancer imaging applications. Such constructs are explored for enhancing diagnostic capability and precision in tumor localization as well as for potential theranostic (therapy plus diagnostic) use. Mechanistically, the Fe3O4 core generates strong T2* relaxation in MRI and, when excited in the NIR region, Cy5.5 emits quantifiable fluorescence, facilitating sensitive multimodal detection. Development and formulation details are available in current preclinical and early translational imaging research[7].
