Overview

Febarbamate is a small molecule drug belonging to both the barbiturate and carbamate families. It was developed as an anxiolytic and tranquilizer, used primarily in Europe for the treatment of generalized anxiety and alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Febarbamate is a derivative of barbituric acid and carbamate, structurally related to phenobarbital but with modifications that reportedly eliminate sedative-hypnotic effects. The drug was marketed in the 1980s as a single agent or in combination (notably as tetrabamate), but it was later withdrawn from the market due to concerns about potential liver toxicity. Its mechanism of action is not fully established; while it shares structural features with other carbamates (which can act via acetylcholinesterase inhibition), febarbamate does not appear to have typical sedative or hypnotic properties associated with barbiturates[1][3][4][5].
