Overview

FEC-100 is a dose-intensified combination chemotherapy regimen used primarily in the neoadjuvant treatment of operable and locally advanced breast cancer. The regimen consists of three active pharmaceutical ingredients: fluorouracil (5-FU), epirubicin (administered at a dose of 100 mg/m²), and cyclophosphamide. This combination is designed to shrink tumors prior to surgical intervention, often facilitating breast-conserving surgery instead of mastectomy. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways: fluorouracil acts as an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase to disrupt DNA synthesis; epirubicin is an anthracycline that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II; and cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent that induces DNA cross-linking. A specific study conducted by Assiut University evaluated the clinical outcomes of this regimen in patients in Upper Egypt.
