Overview

Fecal bacteriophage transfer (FBT), often referred to as fecal filtrate transfer (FFT), is an investigational microbiome-based therapy that involves the administration of a processed, bacterial-free filtrate derived from the feces of healthy donors. Unlike traditional fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), the filtration process removes live bacteria, fungi, and parasites, resulting in a product that primarily contains the donor's virome (especially bacteriophages), metabolites, and proteins. The therapy aims to modulate the recipient's gut microbiome by utilizing bacteriophages to selectively infect and lyse specific bacterial populations, thereby shifting the microbial community toward a healthier state. It is currently being studied for its potential to enhance gastrointestinal maturation and prevent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants.
