Overview

Fecal filtrate is a preparation derived from human or animal feces that has been processed to remove intact bacteria, retaining only bacterial debris, metabolites, bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria), and other soluble components. It is used experimentally as an alternative to traditional fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) for the treatment of recurrent *Clostridioides difficile* infection (CDI) and other gastrointestinal disorders. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may involve restoration of gut microbial balance through the transfer of non-living microbial products such as bacteriophages and metabolites like short-chain fatty acids. Recent studies suggest that these components can modulate the gut microbiome and host immune response even in the absence of live bacteria[1][2][4].
