Overview

Fecal filtrate transplantation (FFT) is an investigational biologic therapy being developed by the University of Pécs for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). Unlike conventional fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), FFT utilizes a sterile filtrate of donor stool, which has had all intact microorganisms removed. The active components consist of non-living bacterial products, including metabolites, bacteriophages, proteins, antimicrobial compounds, and bacterial DNA. The proposed mechanism is the restoration of gut homeostasis without transferring live bacteria, which could offer a significant safety advantage for immunocompromised patients by eliminating the risk of pathogenic transmission. The University of Pécs is conducting the FILTRATE trial, a Phase 3 study comparing lyophilized fecal filtrate capsules to conventional FMT for treating multiple recurrent CDI. [2]
