Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational live microbial therapy being studied by Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in adults. The therapy involves transplanting fecal material from healthy donors into patients to restore the balance of the gut microbiota. In clinical trials, it is administered in capsule form. The proposed mechanism of action involves modulating the immune system through the gut-skin axis, rebalancing the Th1/Th2 immune response, reducing inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IgE, and improving intestinal barrier function. Clinical studies have shown that FMT can lead to significant improvements in disease severity scores (SCORAD and EASI) and reduce the need for topical corticosteroids. This therapy is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for atopic dermatitis.
