Fecal Microbiota Transfer (FMT) is an investigational microbial therapy being developed and evaluated by the Medical University of Warsaw, in collaboration with the Human Biome Institute, for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The therapy, specifically studied in the EFFACE-PD trial, involves the administration of healthy donor microbiota into the patient's intestine via colonoscopy. The primary objective is to modulate the gut-brain axis and restore a healthy intestinal microbiome, which is often dysbiotic in Parkinson's patients. By correcting this dysbiosis, the treatment aims to slow the progression of motor symptoms, alleviate chronic constipation, and potentially improve the absorption and pharmacokinetics of levodopa. This approach targets the systemic and neuroinflammatory pathways linked to gut health in neurodegenerative disorders.
