Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic product being developed by Massachusetts General Hospital for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. Administered as oral capsules, the therapy consists of live bacterial communities derived from the fecal matter of healthy donors. [6] The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of a healthy gut microbiome, aiming to correct the dysbiosis commonly found in patients with cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy. [2, 6, 8] By introducing beneficial bacteria, such as those from the Ruminococcaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae families, FMT is intended to reduce the intestinal burden of harmful, neurotoxin-producing organisms, thereby improving cognitive function. [3, 4] The therapy is being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03420482). [2, 4, 5]
