Overview

Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) is a therapeutic procedure used to restore a healthy microbial balance in the gut by transferring stool from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient. This specific intervention, developed and studied by the Mayo Clinic, focuses on treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in pediatric patients. The treatment aims to displace the pathogenic C. difficile bacteria and restore the diversity of the intestinal microbiome, which is often depleted following antibiotic use. The Mayo Clinic study specifically evaluates the comparative efficacy of fresh stool from familial donors versus frozen, banked stool from anonymous screened donors.
