Fecal microbiota transplant is a biologic therapy investigated by Duke University for the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile (formerly Clostridium difficile) infection. The therapy consists of freeze-dried, encapsulated fecal microbiota sourced from healthy, screened donors, which is administered orally. The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of a healthy and diverse gut microbiome. The introduction of beneficial bacteria helps to outcompete and suppress the pathogenic C. difficile, resolving the infection and preventing recurrence. Duke University's Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Program, established in 2019, has been involved in Phase 2 clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this encapsulated formulation. [2, 4, 6] While Duke sponsors these investigations, the microbiota preparations have been sourced from external stool banks like OpenBiome. [2, 3]
