Fecal microbiota transplant (Hvidovre University Hospital) is an investigational microbiome-based therapy being developed by Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. [1] This therapy involves the transplantation of fecal microbiota from healthy donors into patients. The underlying hypothesis is that prolonged undernutrition in anorexia nervosa leads to a dysbiotic gut microbiome that perpetuates the disease, and that transplanting a healthy microbiome can help 'reboot' the gut-brain-axis to improve clinical outcomes. [1, 6] The therapy is being studied in the 'ReBoot: FMT in Anorexia Nervosa' trial (NCT05834010), an open-label, non-randomized feasibility study in adult women. [2, 7] Administration is either oral via capsules or as a rectal enema. [2] A publication from January 2026 reported that the single FMT treatment was feasible and safe, successfully shifting the gut bacteria profile toward that of the donor and improving stool consistency. [7, 9]
