Overview

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic therapy involving the transfer of fecal matter from a healthy donor to a recipient to restore a healthy gut microbiome. [2, 14] The specific product developed by Jinling Hospital, China, is being evaluated for the treatment of slow transit constipation (STC). [3, 12] A Phase 2 randomized clinical trial (NCT02526849) investigated the efficacy and safety of FMT administered via a nasointestinal tube in adult patients with STC. [3, 8] The presumed mechanism of action is the restoration of microbial diversity and balance in the recipient's gut, which is often disrupted in patients with constipation. [1] This can lead to the modulation of gut motility, metabolic pathways (such as bile acid metabolism), and intestinal barrier integrity, ultimately improving bowel function and alleviating constipation symptoms.
