Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplantation is an investigational live biotherapeutic product being studied by Massachusetts General Hospital for the treatment of auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), also known as gut fermentation syndrome. [2, 7] The therapy aims to restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria by transferring fecal matter from a healthy donor into the patient's gastrointestinal tract. [3] In the clinical trial, this is being administered via oral capsules following a pre-treatment regimen of antibiotics and a colon cleanse to clear the existing gut microbiome. [5, 7] The study is designed as a pilot to assess the safety and feasibility of this approach for ABS, a condition where gut microbes ferment carbohydrates into ethanol, causing intoxication without alcohol consumption. [2, 3]
