Overview

Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is a microbial therapy being developed by the University of Alberta for the treatment of active ulcerative colitis. The therapy involves the administration of a processed stool suspension from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of the patient. The goal is to restore a diverse and stable microbial ecosystem, thereby displacing dysbiotic bacteria and modulating the host's inflammatory immune response. This specific program focuses on the feasibility of serial FMT administrations to maintain clinical remission and ensure the long-term engraftment of donor-derived microbiota in patients with mild to moderate disease.
