Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic product being studied by the University of Alberta for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). The therapy involves transferring fecal bacteria from a healthy donor to a patient to restore a healthy gut microbiome. In patients with liver cirrhosis, an imbalanced gut microbiome (dysbiosis) can lead to increased production of neurotoxins, such as ammonia, which contribute to the neuropsychiatric symptoms of HE. The pilot study conducted by the University of Alberta aimed to determine if FMT could reverse HE in cirrhotic patients who had breakthrough episodes despite standard maintenance therapy with lactulose and/or rifaximin.
